Study: Diet May Help ADHD Kids More than Drugs

Hyperactivity. Fidgeting. Inattention. Impulsivity.  If your child has one or more of these qualities on a regular basis, you may be told that he or she has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. A new study finally suggests food may be the key.

Published in The Lancet journal, the study suggests that with a diet that restricts food sensitivities, kids with ADHD could experience a significant reduction in symptoms.  According to Dr. Lidy Pelsser’s study, 64 percent of children diagnosed with ADHD are actually experiencing a hypersensitivity to food.  “After the diet changes, they were just normal children with normal behavior,” she says.

At SNM, we test for food sensitivities as well as allergies and have found similar results. The food sensitivity test is a simple finger prick blood spot test that we send to a lab that evaluates 96 common foods (expanded tests are available as well). We have found that removing the offending foods for a period of time, while supporting the gastro-intestinal tract and digestion, allows the offending foods to be reintroduced with no reaction.

Amazing to read that over 60% of kids with ADHD are having a reaction to food. This is definitely a place in medicine that can help so many of our young children. The meds for this condition are simply awful and diet is so important. Thanks for your blog!
